Russia will consider the possible adoption of a second wave of US sanctions as a “declaration of economic war”, and will respond with all the means at its disposal, according to the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Yesterday, the United States said it would impose new economic sanctions against Russia in connection with the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain and mentioned a possible second wave of sanctions in the future.
“If there is something like a ban on the activity of banks or on the use of one currency or another, it could be called a very direct declaration of economic war”, said Dmitry Medvedev. “Russia will have to react to this war – by economic methods, by political methods, if necessary by other methods, and our American friends must understand this”, added the Russian Prime Minister.
The Kremlin criticized yesterday the announcement of the first wave of US sanctions that will affect the export of some technological products.
A possible second wave, called “draconian” by an US official, could include closing US airports for Russian airlines and even halting diplomatic relations between the two countries.
