The US President Donald Trump fired his Foreign Minister, Rex Tillerson, nominating the CIA Director Mike Pompeo as his replacement. The news the president announced on Twitter, where thanked Rex Tillerson for his job as Secretary of State.
Donald Trump also named Gina Haspel to become the CIA’s first female director.
A little later, Trump said in an official statement that he was “proud to nominate” Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State.
“As director of the CIA, Mike won praise from the members of both parties, stepping up our intelligence, upgrading our defensive and offensive capabilities, and building close relationships with our friends and allies in the international intelligence community”, said Donald Trump. “I have known Mike very well in the past 14 months, and I am convinced that he is the right person for the post in this critical time. He will continue our program to restore America’s place to the world by strengthening our alliances by committing our adversaries and striving to remove nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula”, added the US President.
Earlier, Rex Tillerson announced that the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Britain “is obviously coming from Russia” and will surely “cause a response”. Speaking to journalists as he flew from Nigeria to Washington, Tillerson said he did not know whether Moscow was aware of the poisoning, but added that the neuropathic substance used could not come from any other country.
The dismissal occurs after months of tense relations between Trump and Tillerson, in which the US president often used Twitter to downplay Secretary of State’s efforts in international diplomacy.
