Iran will resist the sanctions imposed by the United States on Monday, attacking the Washington’s actions to weaken the Iranian influence in the Middle East region.

The US re-imposition of the sanctions, which were abolished in 2015 when the Iranian nuclear agreement was concluded, adds 300 new objects to punitive US measures including oil, transport, insurance, and banking companies.

The European countries that continue to support the nuclear deal have said they are opposed to the re-imposition of sanctions. Similar is the opinion of the major buyers of Iranian oil, including China.

Switzerland has announced that it is holding talks with the US and Iranian governments to establish a humanitarian payment channel to continue access to Tehran’s food and medicine.

The US sanctions allow trade with humanitarian goods such as food and pharmaceuticals, but measures imposed on banks and trade bans are likely to make these goods more expensive.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said hat the sanctions “are the toughest measures ever imposed on the Islamic Republic”.

Iranian President, however, reject concerns about the impact of punitive measures on the country’s economy. “Today the enemy targets our economy. The main purpose of the sanctions is our people”, said the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. According to him, while the US wants to restrict sales of Iranian oil, the country will continue to sell the idea of breaking the effect of these sanctions.

Hassan Rouhani described the US sanctions as “illegal and dishonest” and added that it was an economic war against Iran, and the country was ready to resist any pressure.
