Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has urged the EU not to allow the construction of the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. He met earlier with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini.
Poroshenko commented to journalists that Ukraine and the EU should take joint action to ensure energy security against the “new gas crisis”. For the Ukrainian president the recent disputes between Naftogaz and Gazprom show that Russia is an unreliable gas supplier not only for Ukraine, but also for the European Union.
The Russian gas giant has refused to sell natural gas to Ukraine, although Kiev prepares for supplies in March. This briefly sparked a crisis in Ukraine, but it was quickly overcome by an increase in supplies from neighboring European countries.
The Ukrainian president has also indicated that he believes that Russia intends to use natural gas supplies to expand in geopolitical political power in the future.
“Gazprom must comply with its contract obligations”, said Federica Mogherini, who noted that the EC has already discussed the situation through Energy Commissioner for Maritime Affairs Maros Sefcovic.
Earlier, the EU prolonged by another six months the sanctions against Russia imposed for acts threatening the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
“We do not recognize the annexation (of the Crimea)”, said Federica Mogherini at a press conference after the meeting with Poroshenko. She added that the community continues to condemn the violation of international law in this case.
