Artificial Intelligence Is Shaping the Future of Algorithmic Trading – Here’s How

Currency trading analyst Cody Burgat says artificial intelligence is rapidly influencing the evolution of algorithmic trading, not by replacing traditional strategies, but by enhancing how data is analyzed, patterns are identified, and risk is managed across global markets.

“AI is changing how traders process information,” Burgat explains. “But it doesn’t eliminate the need for sound strategy design, risk controls, or market understanding.”

According to Cody Burgat, artificial intelligence has expanded the analytical capabilities available to algorithmic traders, allowing systems to evaluate larger datasets, adapt to changing market conditions, and identify relationships that may be difficult to detect using traditional rule-based approaches alone. In currency markets, where price movements are driven by macroeconomic data, liquidity flows, and global sentiment, AI tools can help traders interpret complexity more efficiently.

“FX markets generate enormous amounts of information every day,” Burgat says. “AI helps filter that information, but it still needs a framework to operate effectively.”

Burgat cautions that while AI-driven models are becoming more common, they are not immune to the same challenges faced by conventional algorithmic strategies. Issues such as overfitting, data bias, and regime changes remain critical considerations, regardless of how advanced a model may be.

“AI doesn’t remove uncertainty,” says Cody Burgat. “It reallocates it.”

One area where Burgat sees meaningful progress is in the integration of AI with established trading methodologies. Rather than acting as standalone decision-makers, AI systems are increasingly used to enhance signal validation, optimize parameter selection, and assist with risk management decisions within broader algorithmic frameworks.

“The strongest applications of AI tend to support existing logic rather than override it,” Burgat explains. “Technology works best when it complements human-designed structure.”

Burgat also emphasizes that AI does not eliminate drawdowns or guarantee consistent performance. Like all trading systems, AI-based strategies remain subject to periods of underperformance, particularly when market behavior shifts beyond the conditions present in training data.

“Markets evolve faster than models,” Burgat says. “That’s why ongoing evaluation and disciplined oversight remain essential.”

Looking ahead, Burgat believes artificial intelligence will continue to play a growing role in algorithmic trading, particularly as computational power and data accessibility improve. However, he stresses that success will depend less on adopting the latest technology and more on applying it responsibly.

“AI is a powerful tool,” Cody Burgat concludes. “But in trading, tools are only as effective as the principles guiding their use.”
